OnSpeed - No Windows Mobile 5 Version Coming

OnSpeed – No Windows Mobile 5 Version Coming

I’ve mentioned OnSpeed before. It’s a service/software that works to compress data used across a dial-up or GPRS connection – reducing the amount of data downloaded, and speeding up the connection.

I’ve used it on my laptop when in hotel rooms at 56kbps or worse, 9.6kbps GPRS – and it does it’s job well to make life a bit easier when you have a slow connection.

Since upgrading my PDA to a Dell Axim x50v with Windows Mobile v5, I’ve been waiting for OnSpeed to upgrade their service to work with WM5. It was promised over a year ago, but still hasn’t arrived.

So I was dissapointed when OnSpeed got back to my “Where is the WM5 version?” e-mail with the following response:-

“Dear Sir/Madam,

Unfortunately it is unlikely that support for Windows Mobile 5 devices will be added in the near future as there has been no date set for this.

yours,

ONSPEED Customer Services”

So for now, OnSpeed remains a decent product – but for laptop or older model PDA users only.

In our last email, we only answered your question directly but did not actually point out why support for WM 5 devices had been postponed. Reason for this is the introduction of ONSPEED Mobile earlier this year. ONSPEED Mobile works with most Java-supporting mobile phones/devices. For Windows Mobile devices that means if there is a MIDlet Manager in the Programs folder then Java support is available.ONSPEED Mobile is an 'accelerated Java browser' that does not only benefit from server-side compression, as does ONSPEED for Pocket PC, it also has the added benefit of image resizing for small-screen devices. This additionally reduces the download volume when viewing web pages, thus making it even speedier and also cheaper. We have tested ONSPEED Mobile with Windows Mobile 5 and can confirm that it does work fine, for as long as the MIDlet Manager is present.   -------- Not sure if this will display a name, this response has been submitted by ONSPEED Support. Couldn't post a message using Firefox but was able to enter a name. With IE7 I can enter a message but not a name ...

I was going to post this e-mail (which I received today) from OnSpeed Support myself - but they beat me to it. :-)The e-mail went on to offer a free conversion from OnSpeed to OnSpeed Mobile - which is a nice gesture of them.
