StopBadware.org tries to collect and publicise the multitude of Spyware and Adware that is floating around. It has some pretty heavy names supporting it including Vint Cerf, Google and Levano.
I have semi-regular calls from small clients who call on my services because their “computers are running slowly”. The first question I ask them is if they have a teenage son/daughter. The answer is usually “yes” and further investigation reveals said teenager has installed a multitude of P2P software for downloading pirated MP3’s that has infected the PC to such a degree that it runs at 100% CPU utilisation almost constantly.
People are wising up slowly – but sites such StopBadware.org can only help inform people.
